"I will stand down from the governor's race," Kinder said, explaining that he was doing so because he wanted to avoid an internal Republican battle that would make it easier for the likely Democratic nominee, Attorney General Jay Nixon, to win. "This is a campaign I feel I would have won, but I also believe in my heart this is the right decision ... We must unite and let Missouri know how much is at stake in this election."
Kinder will run for re-election as lieutenant governor.
