Globe editorial: Joplin steps up

In an editorial in today's edition, the Joplin Globe notes that in the time of crisis since the tornado struck May 22, city and school leaders and others have stepped up and performed well:

We want to make mention of some of those who stepped up when it was absolutely necessary, and who, in our opinion, have earned the confidence of the Joplin residents at a time when it was most needed.

City Manager Mark Rohr has been a leader among leaders. He’s taken charge and has been Joplin’s point man at meetings, press conferences and memorial services. His calm, but authoritative demeanor, has set the tone.

We’d also like to single out C.J. Huff, Joplin’s school superintendent, who will face a summer like no other. His management style, far different from Rohr’s, has been just as effective in rallying teachers, staff and students.

Huff is determined to have school up and running by Aug. 17. He will need the support from the entire community to meet that kind of goal. But we think he can lead the way.

Of course, both of these men have been supported by their staffs and their bosses, the officials Joplin voters elected.

Utility workers, police and firefighters, nurses, doctors and heavy machine operators have worked tirelessly saving lives and restoring services.

Finally, the volunteers of our entire region have been everywhere for everybody.
