THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SPRINGFIELD HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SNOW...SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM CST MONDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT. * TIMING AND AREAS AFFECTED...AREAS SOUTH OF U.S. 54 AND NORTH OF A LINE FROM BRANSON TO EMINENCE MISSOURI...INCLUDING THE GREATER I-44 AND MUCH OF THE U.S. 60 CORRIDORS FROM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. * SNOW AND SLEET ACCUMULATIONS...FREEZING RAIN WILL MIX WITH AND THEN CHANGE TO SLEET FROM NORTH TO SOUTH LATE TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY. ONE TO LOCALLY THREE INCHES OF SLEET WILL BE POSSIBLE...DEPENDING ON THE EXACT TIMING OF PRECIPITATION CHANGE OVER. A TRANSITION TO SNOW IS THEN EXPECTED LATER SUNDAY. SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW CAN BE EXPECTED ON TOP OF THE ICE AND SLEET. * ICE ACCUMULATIONS...ONE TENTH TO A QUARTER INCH OF FREEZING RAIN IS EXPECTED ACROSS THIS REGION...MAINLY TONIGHT INTO EARLY SUNDAY. FREEZING RAIN WILL EVENTUALLY TRANSITION TO SLEET AND THEN SNOW FROM NORTH TO SOUTH. * WINDS AND VISIBILITY...NORTH WINDS BETWEEN 10 AND 20 MPH...WITH GUSTS BETWEEN 20 AND 30 MPH...ARE EXPECTED THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING. SNOW IS EXPECTED TO BE VERY LIGHT AND FLUFFY IN NATURE...AND CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW CAN BE EXPECTED. VISIBILITIES MAY BE REDUCED TO LESS THAN A HALF MILE IN AREAS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL. * IMPACTS...WIDESPREAD WINTRY PRECIPITATION WILL MAKE TRAVEL ACROSS THE REGION DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE. BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW WILL MAKE IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR HIGHWAY DEPARTMENTS TO KEEP ROADWAYS CLEAR...ESPECIALLY EAST TO WEST ROADWAYS...WHERE BLOWING AND DRIFTING WILL BE GREATEST. VERY COLD TEMPERATURES WILL RESULT IN A RISK FOR FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA FOR ANYONE WITHOUT PROPER SHELTER. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW... SLEET...AND ICE ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. STRONG WINDS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE. CONSIDER TAKING A WINTER STORM KIT ALONG WITH YOU. THIS KIT SHOULD INCLUDE SUCH ITEMS AS TIRE CHAINS...BOOSTER CABLES...A FLASHLIGHT...SHOVEL...BLANKETS...EXTRA CLOTHING AND ANYTHING ELSE THAT WOULD HELP YOU SURVIVE IN CASE YOU BECOME STRANDED.
