Motion filed to suppress Craig MIchael Wood's statements to Springfield Police

Springfield Police noticed discrepancies in statements made by accused killer Craig Michael Wood when they interviewed him during the investigation of 10-year-old Hailey Owens' death.

If Wood's lawyer has his way, jurors will never hear that testimony.

Attorney Patrick Joseph Berrigan filed a motion to suppress Monday in Greene County Circuit Court.

According to the probable cause statement included in the court record, Wood, a former coach at Pleasant View Middle School in Springfield, told Detective Kevin Shipley that he left work at Pleasant View at about 3:15 the day of the murder and went straight home. Later, However, "he changed his story and said he went driving around for a while. Craig denided having contact with Owens."

The preliminary hearing for Wood, who is charged with first degree murder, kidnapping, and armed criminal action is scheduled for a week, from today.

Hailey Owens' body was found in Wood's basement, stuffed in trash bags, on February 18, the same day an Amber Alert had been issued after it was reported that a man in a pickup had abducted her off a Springfield city street.
