Probable cause statement: Teacher shot Hailey Owens; stuffed body in trash bags

Ten-year-old Hailey Owens was shot in the base of the skull and stuffed in two trash bags, according to a probable cause statement written today by Detective Neal McAmis of the Springfield Police Department.

Officers found the child's body in the basement of the home of Craig Michael Wood, 45, a in-school  suspension teacher and coach at Pleasant View Middle School and coach in Springfield.

Wood has been charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping, and armed criminal action.

The probable cause statement is printed below:

On 2-18-2014 at 1648, officers were sent to 3247 W. Lombard about an abduction that had just occurred. Officer Castaneda arrived on scene and talked to two eyewitnesses, Carlos and Michelle Edwards. Officer Castaneda got preliminary statements from them, and they were transported to police headquarters for further interviews.

I interviewed Michelle. She told me she was in her garage, with the garage door open, talking with Carlos. Michelle said she saw a young girl walk westbound on Lombard on the north side of the road. She said the female had a cell phone in her hands. Michelle said a tan Ford Ranger drove eastbound on Lombard, drove into the westbound lane of travel and pulled up next to the girl.

Michelle told me she heard the male subject ask the girl where Springfield Street was. Michelle said the girl turned to walk away from the vehicle. She said it was at that time when the male opened the driver's door and said to the girl, "Hey, come here a minute." Michelle said the male extended his hand out the door and motioned for the girl to come to him. Michelle told me the girl took one or two steps closer to the truck. She said the male lunged out of the vehicle, grabbed the girl with his left hand and threw her into the truck "like a rag doll." Michelle said the suspect then fled the area at a very high rate of speed.

Michelle gave me a suspect description. She said he was a white male that had a baseball-style hat on. She said he had grey hair that came out from under the hat. Michelle told me the suspect possibly had facial hair or a beard. She said he appeared to be 45-55 years of age. She said the suspect appeared to be a "taller" individual and she said he had a thin to medium build.

Michelle told me she was also able to get a license plate number from the suspect vehicle. She was adamant the license plate number was 1YF454. She told me she was positive that was the license plate number.

Detective Barb interviewed Carlos. Carlos' story matched that of Michelle's. Carlos also gave a detailed description of the suspect. Carlos said the suspect was a white male that appeared to be in his early to mid 40s. He said the subject had grey hair and was wearing a baseball style hat. He described the suspect as being unshaven, with grey in his facial hair.

Preliminary investigation revealed the victim was Hailey Owens. Owens was only 10 years old. Owens lived about a block from where the abduction occurred. It was believed Owens was walking home from a friend's house.

The license plate number that Michelle provided had been researched by department personnel. That license plate checked to a 2008 Ford pickup to Jim and Regina Wood. Their address was listed as being in Ash Grove. I was informed officers responded to that location and contacted Jim. Jim informed the officers that his son, Craig Wood, was the person who drove that vehicle.

Information was researched about Craig. Craig's description matched that of the suspect and Craig is 45 years old. Craig's address was found to be 1538 E. Stanford.

Sgt. Neal and Sgt. Schwind responded to the area of Craig's residence. Shortly after they arrived, they saw a tan Ford Ranger pull into Craig's driveway. The license plate on the vehicle matched the license plate number that Michelle previously provided. Sgt. Neal and Sgt. Schwind approached Craig as he exited his truck. Sgt. Neil and Sgt. Schwind saw that Craig had a roll of duct tape in his hand as he exited the driver's side door. When Craig saw the officers, he threw the duct tape into the bed of the truck.

Craig agreed to respond to police headquarters for an interview. It was at headquarters where I first saw Craig. Craig appeared just as Michelle and Carlos described the suspect. Craig was tall (6-2) and had a medium build. He had on a baseball-style hat. It could see his grey hair from under the hat. Craig had an unshaven appearance and there was grey in his facial hair.

Detective Kevin Shipley interviewed him at headquarters. Craig initially told Detective Shipley that he got off work (Pleasant View Middle School) about 1515 and went straight home. He later changed his story and said he went driving around for a while. Craig denied having contact with Owens.

Officers did a safety sweep at Craig's residence to check for Owens. When the officers got to the basement steps, they could smell a strong odor of bleach. The odor continued as they entered the basement. The officers informed me the basement floor was wet. They also said they saw bottles of bleach in the basement.

On 2-19-14 at 0128 Detective Barb obtained a signed search warrant to search Craig's residence. Several crime scene technicians responded to the scene. In the basement, the crime scene technicians located two plastic storage totes. They were stacked one on top of the other. There were papers and documents in the top tote. In the bottom tote was what appeared to be the body of a small child. The body was concealed inside two trash bags. The crime scene technicians removed the trash bags and confirmed it was the body of Owens.

Tom Van De Berg, the chief investigator for the Greene County Medical Examiner's office responded to the scene. I contacted Van De Berg at that location. He informed me Owens had what appeared to be a gunshot wound at the base of her skull. He said there were also apparent ligature marks on Owens' arms.

The crime scene investigator continued to process the crime scene. They located a spend .22 caliber shell casing in the basement.

He was NOT a teacher! He was a Para that was hired to babysit ISS kids!

Who cares if he was a teacher or not, he worked in a school, and thats bad enough!! That could have been anyones child! This little girl did not deserve such brutality. My thoughts go out to the Owens family! Bless you, and may your hearts be filled with the love your community is giving/sending your way in your time grief. God is watching over your little girl now. May peace be with you.

Don't get me wrong...we all want answers here, however, this is just too soon to be posting this I believe. We all understand this is a horrible crime, but the things described here are just too soon for most people. Considering this did just happen THIS morning.

If she had ligature marks that means she was alive when he had her bound. That monster needs to be burnt at the stake.

He needs tortured to no end... Let me get a hold of the s. o. b... He sick in the head and need to suffer from every kind of torture possible

I never allow my children out of my sight, for this very reason! I preach to them all the time and tell them how cruel this world is! That you cant trust ANYONE!

He deserves to be tortured, killed, then hopefully he burns in hell. Next time your kids ask you if monsters are real, don't lie to them and say no, tell them yes and they walk among us everyday, the people we trust, those who aren't suppose to hurt us. Tell them to always be cautious, and always watch them.

Why is there no information any where about her parents?

A monster...as I sit here and pray for the family of Hailey Owens, I am at a loss for words. May peace be with the Owens family. Also for the parents of this monster. I can bet they had no clue that their son was capable of this crime.

I think he needs to be beaten to an inch of his life then taken to the desert and chained over a fire ant hill. Let the wild animals have him since that is what he is. A sick animal.

Ok so there were two witnesses that seen this abduction. Why didn't they do anything? Just stand there while a young girl is grabbed and taken away to her death? Ignorant people...they could have stopped this and she could have been alive still possibly if they would simply have acted.

Why in the world would anyone be questioning anything here. It's way too soon. True, this is wrong in every respect. Anger is certainly the foremost expected response as it was with me. However, we pay professionals to investigate this matter and I am sure they will do a very thorough job. They did a wonderful job getting information out and tracking this suspect down. Unfortunately the perpetrator was hell bent in this matter and accomplished his mission quickly. Secondly, we have a judicial system, flawed as it may be. Allow the system to do its job. The quilty party in this case will experience justice in the end. Remember Jeffrey Dahmer? Prison is not a good place to be for whom ever is convicted of this heinous crime against a child. If we are going to try him, or her, in the media then lets agree to get rid of our legal system and become a wholly barbaric society. Everyone deserves their day in court. That's why we have it.

One anonymous person asks "Why is there no information any where about her parents?" Let me ask why would you even be concerned about the parents? Clearly this child was kidnapped. The parents are not on trial here. Their child is dead and you want to know about mom and dad. Let me ask this, where were you when this child needed help? Answer that one. Get yourself a life gossip junkie.

I kind of agree with this....all they would have had to do was yell at the girl to cime here and he probably would have drove off....I am not by any means saying they are at fault but if I was watching the same thing it wouldnt have gotten that far before I reacted...

Anonymous said...

Actually those two witnesses did. One of them even got in their car and chased them down but lost them in traffic. He said he felt so bad he couldn't get farther but he tried. So don't call those people ignorant before you even know the whole story..

it is not too soon to be telling the people of Springfield and surrounding areas exactly what took place. everyone deserves to know what kind of society we live in and all parents deserve to know that there are these monsters out there lurking in our streets. take your sensitivity elsewhere. If you don't want to know what happened then don't read about it. I for one am glad that we are being told exactly what happened in a quick fashion.

Yeah the mom was acting like nothing happened and she was laughing and playing on her phone and eating pizza like it was a big party

An interesting Facebook comment about Hailey's mother and her lack of emotion over her daughter's murder. Ricky Riggins was a neighbor who tried to follow the kidnapper.

Wow... I am speechless that anyone in this comments string has the nerve to even attempt scolding the witnesses.

Were you there? No. Therefore, how can you even begin to assert that they failed to try anything? Of course, you in all of your infallible wisdom and clear thinking would have just miraculously read the entire situation for what it was, and would have thwarted this kidnapping without so much as a second thought, or fumble.

Fantasies of grandeur, much?

Some information just has NO need to be out for the gossipmongers....this is a perfect example. Shame on you Randy Turner.

He's sick!!! How could anyone do this to a beautiful little girl. She didn't deserve this and her parents didn't either. Rest in peace beautiful angel!!!!

I'm sorry but Mr. And Mrs. Edwards sound less like witnesses and more like accomplices. They were able to get all that information and yet it never once occurred to them to help.

My prayers go out to the parents, family, and also the friends of Hailey at school. The children at the school have to be terrified and sad. I pray that God gives them peace of mind and comfort at this hard time.

So you are just going to shelter them from the world? What a terrible way to parent a child. You have been brainwashed by the media. Just because crime occurs doesn't mean you shouldn't trust people or ever let your kids out of your sight. You are doing them more harm than good. In all honesty, you should have never had kids. Yes, sick people do exist in this world, and you are one of them. Let your kids live!

I agree with you! This world is becoming a more dangerous place every day, and we parents and grandparents are responsible for protecting our precious little ones.

Anonymous said...

Wrong: The world is not becoming more and more dangerous every single day. Where do you find your information to back that statement up? As far as I can tell, all data shows that the world, in terms of crime, isn't any worse off now than it was 30 or 40 years ago. The difference is that you now live in a world with a 24 hour news cycle that incessantly rams only the worst of the worst down your throat.

Research, it is your friend.

It is tragic for everyone involved. We don't know all of the details about the man and woman that witnessed the abduction and how they responded. Clearly, they were tuned in enough to give an accurate description and evidently one of them tried to follow him. Clearly yelling or running to a childs aid in a situation like this would be a good idea but do we even know that they did not do that- that might be an assumption. My heart goes out to all involved. I find it very disturbing that this man was working in any capacity within the school system. He has a prior criminal infraction history according to Missouri Casenet including possession of a controlled substance.

I would say its parents are going to thru enough..wouldn't you?

The school district had better ran a creditable background check on Woods or they haveblood on their hands too.

Anonymous said...

Wow I'm shocked at the comments about the witnesses. If it weren't for them he could of been free today to do it again and again. They were being law abiding citizens and did the best they could and got the best description they could. R.I.P. Hailey

I don't live in your community I don't even live in your state, but as to the comments about the witnesses... it was immediately released they TRIED to help her! This monster was out of the truck and had thrown her in the truck and gone.. how many SECONDS do you think that took? About 5 SECONDS.. not MINUTES.. a persons garage is not sitting at the sidewalk! It takes that long for your mind to acknowledge what you are seeing and she managed to get a FULL license plate number. Kudos to you lady.. I'm not sure I could remember that long of a plate number especially after the trauma of seeing a child thrown into a car like a rag doll. I can only imagine the nightmares these witnesses are having. You sit here and criticize Hailey's mother at her "lack of emotion"... Have you ever heard of shock... right now her mind and body are numb.. in shock.. how do you know what is going on behind her closed doors! Some people don't publically display grief... Do not make her out to be the monster.. she did NOT kill her child... as for the real monster.. when he dies.. and he will... sure am glad it isn't me that will stand before god and receive HIS JUDGEMENT/SENTENSE... will suck to be you!

Anonymous said...

No, actually they didn't. Read the police report it says nowhere in it that they did anything but stand there and watch it happen.

Hailey is a person not an it!

Anonymous said...

Maybe you didn't see this part...

According to the search warrant documents, at least three people told police that they saw the pickup drive back and forth along the street before the driver stopped to ask Hailey directions, then he dragged her inside the vehicle. One homeowner gave chase on foot and another in his car.
