A malpractice lawsuit filed Thursday in Jasper County Circuit Court alleges a neonatal nurse practitioner botched a circumcision.
According to the petition, after the circumcision on October 16, 2025, the child had to be taken to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City for reattachment of a portion of the organ that had been inadvertently cut off.
The lawsuit alleges malpractice, negligence and inadequate training.
Listed as defendants are Mercy Joplin and the neonatal nurse practitioner. The plaintiff is the child's mother, representing his interests.
The plaintiff, who is represented by Scott Vorhees of the Joplin firm of Johnson, Vorhees and Martucci, is asking for damages and demanding a jury trial.

Any circumcision performed on a child in the absence of bona fide medical necessity is a “botched” circumcision. This one is just especially egregious because the boy will be even more sexually impaired than others violated in this manner.
May the plaintiffs crush the defendants.
My MD daughter trained and worked at Barnes Children’s in St. Louis and did many circumcisions. Only docs do them there.
1148, hear hear. No more genital mutilation, from what I heard the US is basically the only place that practices circumcisions. I'm assuming Israel as well but maybe that's just another trick they've pulled on us Christians, convincing us that we need to mutilate our genitals to both stay clean and make it into heaven...
It's clearly botched, however every circumcision carries risk and dissatisfaction. A hugely profitable assembly line of wasteful cosmetic procedures. Inappropriate neonatally, dubious in later life, horrific in these situations. Whilst I hope the case is a success, the parents carry this responsibility too unless they have not been given adequate health information to illicit informed consent.
Infant genital mutilation is the great shame of our nation and medical industry. May every perpetrator be sued into oblivion until this horrible abusive practice ends.
Euphemism for genital mutilation, vicious sexual assault of a minor.
Why is this just standard and routine procedure in American hospitals, like what is wrong with our society? Foreskin is NOT a birth defect and is just the male version of the clitoral hood. We used to do partial clitoral hood removal (female circumcision) in this country, but realized it’s unethical to do. The AAP does not recommend parents pierce a baby girl’s ears, but instead recommends parents wait until consent can be given. Tonsillectomies used to be standard and routine procedures in American clinics, but we all realized that’s now not medically necessary, so why do we treat circ differently? Why is it that we still act like it’s ok to do this to a baby because we think their normal genitalia “looks weird” in its normal flaccid state? The glans are meant to be covered when flaccid and exposed when erect, much like a woman’s clitoris and her clitoral hood, it naturally retracts when erect and covers the clitoris when soft.
Totally unnecessary. The foreskin is the male version of the clitoral hood and is far from a birth defect.
