The hearing, which was originally scheduled for September 9, was pushed back when Ross, who had been represented by a public defender at his own request, hired the high-powered Springfield firm of Wampler and Passanise to defend him.
Three attorneys from that firm, Joseph S. Passanise, James R. Hayes and Thomas D. Carver are representing Ross, according to court documents.
The probable cause affidavit claims Ross asked his campaign manager to plant cocaine on his primary opponent Louise Secker. Ross defeated Secker by 32 votes in August, but quit the race after charges were filed against him.
The Jasper County Republican Central Committee selected Secker as his replacement.

Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap
Dirty deeds and they're done dirt cheap
Thomas Ross, has "New High-Powered Lawyers", Wampler & Passanise Law Office, do we think that will make a difference? This is interesting because Phil Glades, who represents most local yokel criminals is representing his replacement, Louise Secker who has been selected to replace Thomas Ross as the Republican nominee for Missouri House District 161.
Of course, Dee Wampler, has been dead since October 2021. The Missouri Supreme Court suspended prominent Springfield criminal defense attorney Dee Wampler June 30, 2019, for three years and then placed him on probation for three years and assessed a $1,500 fee.
A disciplinary panel found Wampler violated the Rules of Professional Conduct involving communications with a client and keeping the client's money separate from his personal funds. The court opinion backed that finding.
Then in 2001, the record established that Dee Wampler had accumulated enough points to earn a one-year revocation and that he had been convicted of driving while intoxicated on three separate occasions, requiring the ten-year denial of his driving privilege. The director also states that Wampler presented no contrary evidence during the hearing.
Attorneys have just as much dirt and criminal behavior as the people they represent!
Probably more so because they know how to manipulate the law and, at the end of the day, judges are also attorneys.
I was a cop for 26+ years and I personally saw more 'deals' happen 'off the record' between attorney's at the diner closest to the courthouse than I ever did in a courtroom.
If I hear the phrase “high powered attorney” used, it better be followed by the highly esteemed partnership of Dewey, Cheatem and Howe. Anybody else is just a bunch of ambulance chasers.
There is also that lawfirm, Ditchem, Quick, and Hide.
The historic Red Lion bar in Joplin, MO, was once the party drinking place for a lot of Judges, Prosecuting Attorneys and Defendant Attorneys, where deals and drugs were once very common. It is permanently closed and its former location at 7th and St. Louis Street is now home to a Green Light Dispensary, which is interesting since there was a lot of marijuana and white substances moving through that location back in its day. But not one Attorney or Judge ever got busted, Hmmm!
