Joplin doctor pleads not guilty to statutory rape, sodomy charges

A Joplin doctor waived his formal arraignment in Jasper County Circuit Court Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to felony statutory rape and statutory sodomy charges.

The complaint alleges that Dr. Jeremy Goins, 35, committed the crimes with a 16-year-old girl between February 1, 2016, and February 28, 2017.

(UPDATE: Goins' attorney expects charges to be dropped.)

According to the probable cause affidavit, Goins "began touching her above and under her clothes" in late February or early March 2016. "Jeremy would also rub the juvenile's back and kiss her stomach. Jeremy would also rub his penis on the juvenile's butt, while both were wearing clothes."

The affidavit alleges the abuse grew even worse. relating an incident in which Goins placed his sex organ in the girl's mouth and four or five occasions in which they had sexual intercourse, with the incidents occurring at locations in Joplin and Carl Junction.

The next hearing for Goins, who is free on $40,000 bond, is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 7 before Judge Joseph Hensley.

I agree! Now that everyone has judged and convicted him before he has had a fair trial, I hope that Karma bites you all in the ass! I happen to know a man who was on a school board and a girl accused him of malicious lies, causing him to step down from his position, and struggled to keep his business open. He maintained his innocence, and whwn the truth came out, the girl was lying, and her father had coached her into telling the lies against this man. His only sin, was having an affair with the girls mother, and the father wanted him convicted of being something that he was not, all in the name of jealousy. He was found innocent of all charges. Now then, you people who are so quick to believe the media, I hope you get what's coming to you.

When you put yourself in a position as a trusted professional in your community you HAVE TO seperate yourself from situations like this. He had no business hanging anywhere near a 16 yr old girl whether this article is true or false. This man destroyed his life by making bad choices so maybe (if this is false) he needs to seek another career because he lacks good ole' fashion common sense. Personally I think he did it just because a good minded man isn't going to pay any attention to that young of a girl unless he thinks he is going to get away with something... Prevoked or otherwise.

I'd say this girl probably instigated it, led him on & he jumped at the thought, and when it got too much for her to handle reported him in hopes to get a little money because he's a rich Dr. I don't know the Dr or the girl, but I know many other Dr's & many other 16 yr old girls. I was 16 yrs old once...and how I would have loved to have had a rich Dr to spoil me at 16! I also know many 16 yr old girls who would love to have a Dr they could say they were dating to be cool at school....little do they understand there's alot more involved than just going to a movie and eating a bag of popcorn together.

To all the "kill the messenger" morons in here, Turner is not accusing the doctor of anything. Jeez, he is reporting on an allegation made in a legal affidavit, he did not file it, just reported it had been placed in the court's record. It will be decided at trial, of his guilt or innocence, not in a court of public opinion. How good a doctor he is has no bearing on his guilt or innocence. I'm sure he will be well represented, and if the prosecutor believes the child, then she should be well represented as well.

Minors are not willing. It is rape regardless of her verbal consent. We have these laws to protect children from doing things that are not in their best interests such as sex with a 35-year-old.

It is *always* the responsibility of the adult to disengage from a child who is attempting to initiate a sexual relationship.

I am shocked that people here would attempt to paint a child as being the one at fault in a statutory rape case.

Age of consent where I am from is 16 year old because girls by this age can intentionally ruin people this way and knowingly do it for the money, especially because they do not fully comprehend the full scale of their actions by falsely claiming such as this. I'm not saying she's lying or he didn't do it but by 16 years old. If you don't know what these kind of claims can do and result in then someone needs to teach their children Lil better. Just saying! And I wonder how she managed to meet him SO many times without someone such as parent/friends/etc...hearing about it. Girls gossip...sounds fishy.

Something seems strange about this. Why would local media not cover this and alert the community? His address on mo case net doesn't exist, either. Weird. If not for the letter to Randy from the attorney, I'd wonder if this was some kind of mistake. News of a doctor in town arrested and arraigned for statutory rape is news in my book. Why no radio, newspaper, or TV mention of this?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anonymous5:10 PM

There seems to be a pattern developing here. Randy broke this story and there is no follow-up from any media. It was just a few weeks ago that Randy broke the story about Dr. Rosenschein, the former Joplin pediatric surgeon who is going to go on trial for child pornography. From the evidence that was presented, it appears likely Rosenschein was a bad egg when he was here in Joplin since there were reports about him before and after his time here. There hasn't been a word about either of these two stories in the Globe or anywhere else around here. What we may be seeing is a case of some Joplin power brokers exerting their influence to keep this information away from the people.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anonymous5:52 PM

Whoever said his address doesn't exist, it does. I don't want to give much away as this is... quite close to me.... think of it this way, the street sign is as it shows on casenet, but it has an extra S on the end.

And he appears to have taken up residence there as a means to separate himself, possibly to protect himself from any other issues.

  29. Anonymous11:27 PM

Missouri... in Missouri is where it is legal for a child of 17 years of age to give consent, the most common age is 16.

  31. Anonymous12:11 PM

Being privy to the facts and a colleague of Dr. Goins, I can't help but feel disappointed mob mentality of our community. Anybody can make an allegation against an individual, but that doesn't give it merit. How would any of the people posting negative comments react if they were put into a similar presentation. I also find it borderline unethical for Mr. Turner to run with a story and include graphic language so as to sensationalize a story. A true reporter will at the least attempt to get both sides of a story. I also question how he was able to so quickly get this information which was not freely made to the public at time of publication. If it was me, I can promise that the reporter would be served with a defamation lawsuit once acquitted.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Anonymous3:46 PM

To Anon 12:11, Yes, anyone can make an allegation, but those allegations do not always lead to an arrest by the police department or to charges being filed by the prosecuting attorney. When charges are filed against someone, particularly against someone who is prominent in the community in some way or another, it is legitimate news. Reporters write about these kind of allegations all of the time. They are public record and there is nothing unethical about Mr. Turner or any other reporter not calling the doctor or the hundreds of other people he has written about who have been charged with crimes for a comment. Dr. Goins' denial of guilt was included in the headline, for heaven's sake. You also appear to be making an allegation that Mr. Turner was fed this information by someone with a grudge against Dr. Goins and that it was not available to the public. Any member of the public can go to the courthouse and have access to probable cause statements at the circuit clerk's office. I have seen Mr. Turner at the Joplin courthouse and assume that he is checking out these records since he has printed much information that is taken from these sources. Everything he wrote was taken directly from public record and he never said, not even one time, that Dr. Goins was guilty. He did not defame Dr. Goins' character. If this does turn out to be a false claim and charges are dropped, then perhaps the doctor has a claim against the accuser. All Mr. Turner did was to print legitimate news, something that so far the Joplin Globe has not done.

A person can be great at their job, compassionate, kind, and still commit illegal acts. People are complex and have different sides. Often-times, an abuser is someone who has some position of power or trust with regards to the victim.

While it is true that the individual in question has not yet been convicted and deserves his day in court, it is also generally true that they don't initiate charges unless there is some evidence.

    ReplyDelete

I would absolutely agree with another comment that Freeman is either exerting its influence or the Globe/other media does not wish to upset Freeman.

If any of this actually happened is yet to be determined. Did anyone consider that this sexually active "child" may have misrepresented herself as far as her age?
And if she's so erotically knowledgeable, it might be that she had her childhood stolen from her by being sexually molested by a relative or friend of the family starting at a young age. What kind of an upbringing has she had or has she suffered through? Where were her parents when she was fooling around with a grown man if in deed she was? And I'm sorry but I don't regard "Turner" whoever he/she is to be an "author"-how laughable, more like a smut peddler who has the qualifications to work for the Enquirer or something of that ilk. They were doing this for a year. it was consintual sex, if it was forced they wouldn't have used statutory rape which means consintual sex between an adult and a child that is not of legal age. It doesn't matter if she asked for it, or if she wanted it. The issue is she is a minor and he has no business touching her.

If you are over 21 and the partner is under 17, it is rape. If she asked for it, it is rape. If she didn't ask for it, it is rape. Reporters report. Lawyers prosecute and defend. The defendant will have every opportunity to defend himself. Let the process play out. And just because he is a doctor, does not make him innocent - or guilty. I don’t know this doctor nor do I know the reporter but to go into graphic details as he did makes me wonder what he reads at night. First of all, I have resided in 35 of the lower 48 states due to work and many times I have read or heard on the news about child abuse but not once had I ever read such graphic details as this so called reporter puts out. First thing he did was, he has poisoned the jury pool. I don’t know a judge that will not grant a change in venue based upon this report. Second is a two part, the details he puts out there makes it obvious that the doctor and the girl know each other, if they’re not relatives they’re family friends, second part it sounds like he has a vendetta against this doctor. But let’s get back to the details, I lived in New Mexico and in 2016, a 10 year suffered abuse at the hands of her mother and mother’s boyfriend, sadly the girl was murdered and yet the New Mexico police has yet to release the graphic details of the crime even though they have confessions. They don’t want guilty pleas they want convictions in their own community. An eight year old in New Jersey is abused by a teacher and all the people in New Jersey know is that a child was abused but to what extent is still a mystery. There will be no winners in this case thanks to turner, let’s just for a moment say that the girl recants her story and charges are dismissed against the doctor with prejudice, his reputation is ruined not because of the accusations only but the details will haunt the community for years. If turner retracts his story it won’t matter, it will be like throwing a bag of feathers to the wind and trying to gather them all together again, it will never happen. Shame on this want to be journalist, he is a part of the problem we have with the media in the United States and he gets to hide behind the cloak of the constitution.
I have seen people's lives ruined on more than one occasion because someone lied or miss reported something, I worked in Joplin after the tornadoes in 2011. I enjoyed my stay there and I hope the truth comes out. But like I said there will be no winners in the outcome.
