Home searched by FBI, local law enforcement in Sarah Burton case has Joplin Honkies connection

The house being searched by FBI and local law enforcement after finding connections to missing Joplin woman Sarah Burton was frequented by at least one member of the Joplin Honkies gang.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office arrested Douglas Alexius, Joplin, March 1, 2016 at 1174 Crane Drive, the home where the Sheriff's Office and a Joplin Police Department SWAT unit executed a search warrant Monday and found evidence connected to Burton's disappearance.

At the time of his arrest, Alexius was wanted on numerous felony charges, including vehicle theft and assaulting a law enforcement officer. Former Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said Alexius was a member of the Joplin Honkies.

Alexius pleaded guilty November 7, 2016 to a felony receiving stolen property charge and was sentenced to seven years in prison. He was sentenced to three years for resisting arrest, four years on a separate resisting arrest charge, four years and yet another resisting arrest count.

Missouri Probation and Parole records indicate Alexius is still behind bars at the Western Reception and Diagnostic Correctional Center in St. Joseph.

Former Sheriff Ken Copeland told the Joplin Globe March 1, 2016 that deputies had been keeping any eye on the house.

Newton County sheriff's deputies had been keeping an eye on the house at 1174 Crane Drive where Doug Alexius was captured this morning.
"It was a known address that he had been frequenting and we were able to determine that he was in there," Sheriff Ken Copeland said.

When Alexius was arrested, according to the Globe's account, he and two women surrendered without incident.
