Last week I reported to you about HB 2173, which would effectively eliminate marriage in Missouri and reclassify it as a “contract of domestic union.”
It was really kind of an afterthought on my part, because I really didn’t expect it to get out of committee after having a hearing where no one spoke in favor, and it was met with bi-partisan criticism from committee members. I thought of it more as a commentary on the level of political extremism we are seeing even at the State Capitol level.
However, on a straight party-line vote of 9-4, the House General Laws Committee advanced the legislation on Wednesday, Feb. 26, to the Administrative Oversight on Rules Committee where it will face a vote to advance it to the full House for consideration.
I couldn’t be more strongly opposed to this legislation. I think it is a petulant response from some who are opposed to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.
Furthermore, it has the potential to create an unimaginable number of conflicts throughout the entire fabric of case law across the state. Beyond that and because of that, I believe we should be spending our time trying to repair and restore the integrity of our state programs that have recently been mismanaged.
The bureaucracy of our medicaid program is choking the system and preventing children from receiving immunizations and the healthcare we mandate for school enrollment.
Our Medical Marijuana implementation appears to be flawed with inconsistency and inequity. Our roads and infrastructure need more repairs than we can currently fund.
I simply don’t understand the need to undermine the stability and security of upholding our long-standing and traditional role in legally sanctioning marriage.
