All Joplin park playgrounds closed until further notice

Joplin city playgrounds are off limits as of today.

Joplin Parks and Recreation Director Paul Bloomberg (shown in the photo) said it succinctly at the beginning of his presentation during the city COVID-19 briefing this morning.

"We're going to close all playgrounds."

The decision, which will be until further notice comes, Bloomberg said because "It is absolutely crucial for the well being and safety of our community."

The playground areas of the parks will be totally blocked off by Tuesday, Bloomberg said.

Mayor Gary Shaw opened the briefing by sounding an optimistic note, saying that if Joplin residents following proper social distancing and stay at home, "I'm still believing it will not have as big an effect on us as it has on other cities.

"We're going to get through this."

Health Department Director Dan Pekarek noted the second COVID-19 diagnosis in Joplin and the growing number reported by health departments in surrounding communities. "It is gradually increasing in the area.

Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce President Toby Teeter said the Chamber ordered 10,000 masks for the public which will be distributed upon their arrival within the next few days, while another 47,000 have been ordered.

The Chamber has also placed an order for 10,000 N-95 masks to provide to senior care and health care agencies and companies.
