Mayor Ken McClure announced the decision moments ago, saying it was the beginning of a gradual return to normal. Despite the decision, the city and county, like the rest of the state remains under a stay-at-home order through May 3.
Under the guidelines, businesses can take orders by telephone or online, but not in person and can allow curbside pickup. McClure said this would enable the businesses to reopen and put at least some of their employees back to work.
"We are going to see brighter days," McClure said. The mayor stressed that the success of the reopening, which will have more steps announced Wednesday, will depend entirely on businesses and residents continuing to follow social distancing guidelines.
Springfield-Greene County Health Director Clay Goddard said Greene County has had 92 cases of COVID-19 with 38 still active.
Greene County Presiding Commissioner said, "It is you who have saved lives by following the stay-at-home order. Thanks to Greene County residents who looked beyond themselves and thought of others beside themselves.
"Thank you."
