A federal judge today rejected a Joplin prisoner's request for compassionate release due to COVID-19.
Jason L. Childers, 43, who is four years into a 10-year sentenced for receiving and distributing child pornography. says he contracted COVID-19 in prison and should be released because he is overweight and asthmatic.
Childers said he would pose no threat to the community because he would be required to register as a sex offender.
Childers served as his own attorney.
Apparently, that did not satisfy Judge Rosann Ketchmark's reservations.
A federal grand jury indicted Childers in 2015 charging him with receiving and distributing child pornography on four separate occasions in October and December 2014 and with possessing it on April 7, 2015.
The indictment came following an investigation by the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crime Task Force, the FBI and the Joplin, Mo., Police Department.
