Monett Schools mourn death of superintendent

(From Monett R-1 Schools)

Tonight, our school district and community are deeply saddened by the loss of our superintendent, Mr. Russ Moreland, who passed away unexpectedly today. Our district has lost a valued mentor, colleague, and friend. Our hearts are with his family as we join them in grief.

Our immediate focus is on supporting our staff and students by providing the resources needed to process this unexpected news and to begin grieving together. Crisis counselors will be onsite at each of our schools, beginning tomorrow, and will remain available to staff and students as long as they are needed.

In addition, as you talk with your children about loss, please reassure them that a caring team is here to surround them. The following resources help guide this important process.

Tips for Talking with and Helping Children

As we look ahead, please know that our team remains dedicated to serving our district in a way that honors Mr. Moreland. We have a strong team of administrators, teachers and support staff with full support from the Board of Education.

The Board met in executive session this evening to discuss next steps. We will be in touch with regular updates as we move forward. In the meantime, we are here for each other.

Please reach out if we may support you and your family.

Best always,
Dr. Mark Drake
Assistant Superintendent, Monett R-1 Schools
