Allegation: Granby woman shot, killed neighbor's dog, refused to return body

Felony stealing and misdemeanor animal abuse charges were filed Wednesday in Newton County Circuit Court against a Granby woman who allegedly shot and killed her neighbor's dog, then refused to return the body.

The shooting took place November 20, according to the probable cause statement. The Newton County Sheriff's Office was called by the man whose dog was shot, asking that a deputy visit his neighbor, Karen A. Hart (DOB 1982) and get her to return the dog so he could bury it.

The neighbor said there was a cat in his yard, the dog snuck out of his house and chased the cat to the neighbor's property, the probable cause statement said. He said as he walked inside he heard multiple gunshots and saw that the dog almost made it to the fence before dying.

When the man went to the neighbor's home to ask for his dog back, Hart began cussing at him.

Hart told the deputy the dog was in her yard when she shot it and that she was "not going to be attacked by the neighbor's dog."

Karen advised that the neighbor is not getting the dog back.{She said} that when she finds there are no rounds in the dog that they can use against her later she would pitch the dog out in the road.

The dog was the second Hart shot, the owner said.

Later that evening, a truck drove up the road and threw in the dog's body in the owner's yard, according to the probable cause statement.

Karen A. Hart - should have advised the Dog's Owner to keep the Dog inside his yard or on a leash - not just shoot the animal for getting into her yard. Dogs will chase anything - but did she have to use brutal force to solve the problem?

The Story does not mention the Breed of the Dog - - again was it just chasing the cat, as it would any animal or was their presumption that this Dog would attack her, her kids, etc.,

I think she over reacted and if this is the second Dog she killed - - she has a problem, plus not returning or giving access to the dog - should tell you something..

I would wonder about random firing a gun in public - - does she think she is Annie Oakley.

What a horrid excuse for a human. Animals get out. Things happen. That poor poor owner.
