Joplin man charged with raping prisoner in Jasper County Jail

A Joplin man who was released from jail last month when his alleged victims failed to show for his preliminary hearing on kidnapping, rape and sodomy charges, has been charged with sodomizing a prisoner multiple times during his stay in the Jasper County Jail.

A warrant was issued today for the arrest of Michael Donovan Roland, 38, on four felony counts of sodomy. The alleged crimes took place in March.

From the probable cause statement:

I spoke with Victim 1 who gave a detailed disclosure of his cell mate Suspect 1 raping him. He walked me through the statements said by Suspect 1 during the incidents. He gave information such as descriptions of items offered to him by the Suspect before the incident.

Victim 1 stated that Suspect 1 offered him candy and then said he did not need to be paid back. Afterwards Suspect 1 stated he would like {oral sex} but Victim 1 refused. The following day Suspect 1 became increasingly irate towards Victim 1 in the cell to the point Victim 1 hit the intercom to try and get deputies to respond.

When Victim 1 walked by Suspect 1 he was then forced over the desk and described being raped. Victim 1 was also able to talk about what happened after in the cell. Victim 1 stated this happened four separate times in four days. What stopped the abuse was Suspect 1 being released.

The victim has nothing to gain through these allegations and even stated it took so long to come forward because he is a man and was embarrassed about the incident.

Roland had been in jail after allegedly sexually assaulting a 19-year-old Kansas man and a 32-year-old Joplin woman.

Roland allegedly held the Joplin woman captive for five days, raping her multiple times.

Earlier this year, Roland was charged with assaulting a 28-year-old woman. She failed to show at his preliminary hearing.
