The Jefferson City News Tribune reports two dozen employees of the Missouri State of Archives were fired by the Secretary of State Friday due to budget cuts.
The article describes how the employees were taken into a room, told they were being fired and were escorted from the building.
Despite that, a spokesperson from the Secretary of State's office told the News Tribune that the notion that the employees were given no advance warning was "inaccurate," and that standard protocol was followed.
From the wording of the spokesperson's response, it appears Denny Hoskins' idea of advance notice is letting people know several weeks ago there were budget cuts and people might lose jobs, so all workers should consider themselves given notice that their jobs might be among the casualties.
There is no indication that any of those fired had any inkling before Friday they were the victims of budget cuts.
The idea that the employees were given advance notice appears to be at odds with the official letter sent by the secretary of state to the fired employees, which is dated on the same day the employees were told they no longer had jobs. (The copy of the letter pictured was posted on Democratic activist Jess Piper's Bluesky account.)
The cuts eliminate approximately half of those who were working for the State Archives.
I am hearing from folks that the new Missouri Secretary of State, Denny Hoskins, a MAGA Republican, has fired half of the staff in the State Archives today with no warning. These are people that preserve and provide access to state government records…

Misleading headline. It does appear that they were notified. It is not hard to do simple google searches to follow the recent budget process. I had several things that interested me and the field I work in. I took the time to follow and keep up to date. There was no surprise here and the cut to the budget was known several weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteI hate that people have lost their jobs, but it didn't come as a surprise.
I don't understand what the problem is here. A Democrat activist, has a problem with it, I guess. These people serve at the pleasure of the Secretary. They can be removed for cause, budgetary or otherwise. My guess is, you have six unprofessional people who could not keep their politics at home. No time or space for politics or religion in the workplace. Even if you work for the Gov't.
ReplyDeleteDafuq do you know?? The people being let go were honest and hard working. Employees that kept their opinions to themselves and tried to get by silently regardless of how much there was to legitimately complain about.
DeleteHow would you know?
DeleteThey received a months severance. That's a heck of a lot more than most folks get.
ReplyDeleteWay to disregard the bigger picture. This only happened because of the choices made at the top to serve the rich, trickling down to burden the poor. A month’s severance is not generous. It’s an admission of knowing the action was wrong in the first place.
DeleteThe total lack of empathy being shown by the MAGA crowd is a sad commentary on the state of the union.
ReplyDeleteIt was told to employees that there were budget cuts, but everything possible would be done to avoid layoffs. There was absolutely no advance notice to anyone except the highest management, and all of those laid off kept their heads down (no one is going to be dumb enough to be loud about their politics) and were hard working. I suspect their “advance notice” is the time from yesterday to June 30 they’re giving them admin leave. So kind.
