Joplin City Council ready to spend nearly $1.6 million for artificial turf for Joe Becker, Wendell Redden stadiums, softball fields

The first reading of an ordinance authorizing paying Mid America Sports Construction $1,589,851 to replace and install synthetic turf at Joe Becker Stadium, Wendell Redden stadium and four fields at the Gene Bassman Softball Complex is on the consent agenda for the 6 p.m. Monday Joplin City Council meeting.

The projects were approved by voters as part of Phase 3 of the 1/4 cent Parks and Stormwater Sales Tax, according to the project information provided to the council.

The cost is approximately $600,000 more than was originally approved for the project in the city budget.

The council will have to approve a budget amendment to authorize the expenditure.

And when it is all said and done it will end up costing way more than that, that's how our city does things

Once again when the government runs or controls any projects or programs there is always a boondoggle. Why is the Government involved with Softball Fields in the first place? It seems that these investments are for the few not the many - If these Softball Fields, Etc., are so Popular - Why hasn't someone been able to capitalize on them - and then take the City and the Taxpayers out of the issue - why not spend or invest those funds into getting people off of Welfare by sponsoring mandatory Jobs Training or Education - just look at the numbers - the minimum wage in Missouri is $15.00 / hour effective January 1, 2026 - if you work 40-hours a week, 52-weeks a year that is 2080-working hours a year multiple that by $15.00 an hour and you just made - $31,200 Annual Income - it doesn't take very many people getting off of Welfare to cover the costs of $1.6-Million for mandatory Job Training and Education - but NO - Let's spend it on Artificial Grass - - - sounds more like what they are Smoking - - Government is so DUMB - Buy Artificial Grass or Educate and Train 60 or less Welfare Recipients to get a Job and you have Save the Government and the Hardworking Taxpayers all that Money where as if we do not do that we keep spending that much every year - with the same results - WHY OH WHY DO WE NOT EVER THINK - - Just Spend the Hardworking Taxpayers Money - - There is always more where that came from - Right?

Yes just what the City of Joplin needs to spend the taxpayers money on. Nothing like adding more plastics in to our environment and water sources. Ever walk on artificial turf, like football fields? Look down at your feet and they are covered with tiny plastic little balls. That’s why a lot of NFL stadiums are doing away with the artificial turf and returning to natural grass. Plus injuries are reduced by using natural grass compared to the artificial turf. Now imagine all these players running, jumping and falling in to all of these tiny little plastic balls. I don’t think this is money wisely spent. Grass seed is much cheaper and easy to reseeded every fall. The money saved could be used for much more needed issues, that would greatly benefit more citizens in this community than spreading more plastic pollution.
