Lamar woman's death 23 years after drunk driving accident, Greitens scandal top Turner Report/Inside Joplin posts for the week

The event that provided the top post this week on the Turner Report and Inside Joplin Obituaries took place July 1, 1995.

That was the day a drunk driver named Neley Milner, going in excess of 100 miles per hour, crashed into a truck carrying the Phipps family of Lamar.

Eight-year-old Julie Phipps died that day. Her five-year-old sister Abby and father Jerry Phipps were permanently disabled

Milner, who had collected approximately two dozen drunk driving offenses during his adult life, was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

He didn't last that long. Milner died in 2012. Jerry Phipps died late in 2017 and the final death caused by a man who should never have been allowed behind the wheel took place last week when Abby, 27, passed away.

Abby's obituary was the top post this week on Inside Joplin Obituaries. My 1998 essay on how Abby affected Seneca football coach Alvin Elbert was the top post by a wide margin on the Turner Report.

The continuing scandal surrounding Gov. Eric Greitens was featured in five of the top 10 Turner Report posts, while the top Inside Joplin post, also by a wide margin, was the closing of I-44 at night April 17.
