One year after he received a suspended sentence for shooting a Joplin man in connection with a 2019 drug deal, Paul D. Phillips, 36, (top left photo) has been named a person of interest in the March 2 stabbing death of Seth R. Langford, 36, Carl Junction.
After the stabbing, Langford was taken to a local hospital where he died, according to a Jasper County Sheriff's Office news release.
Also named as a person of interest, the release said was Scott B. Burleson, 30, Wyandotte, Oklahoma.
Phillips pleaded guilty October 22, 2022 to second degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. As part of a plea agreement with the Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney's office, Phillips was sentenced to 10 years for assault and seven years on the firearm charge, the sentences were suspended and Phillips was placed on supervised probation for five years. An armed criminal action charge was dismissed.
The agreement was okayed by Judge Gayle Crane.
The Joplin Police Department had initially recommended first degree assault and a felony resisting arrest charge. The prosecuting attorney elected not to file those charges.
During the sentencing hearing, Prosecuting Attorney told the judge Phillips had been serving time in Kansas and had taken steps toward reform.
Prior to his 2023 sentencing, Phillips had received suspended sentences in Jasper and Newton County circuit courts for possession of a controlled substance, tampering with a vehicle, theft and receiving stolen property.
The Jasper County Sheriff's Office is asking that anyone with information on Phillips and Burlesonto call Lt. Mercer at the Sheriff's Office, 417-358-8177 or the dispatcher at 417-359-9100.
