The Jasper County Prosecuting Attorney filed felony stealing charges against two Joplin residents who allegedly stole items from Target on five occasions and sold the items on EBay.
Warrants were issued today for the arrests of Seth Ray Jones (DOB 1991) and Akasha Rashawn Hackett (DOB 1996).
According to the probable cause statement, Jones and Hackett took items from Target five times between November 1 and November 6.
From the probable cause statement:
On 11/06/24 Target contacted the Police Department and advised the suspects had returned to the store and were stealing.Officers with the Joplin Police Department responded and were able to locate Akasha Hackett and Seth Jones. Both subjects were identified as the offenders in the now five cases reported by Target between the above dates.
During my investigation, an interview was completed with Hackett and Jones. Jones provided information that he and Hacket are unemployed and are stealing targeted items from stores so that they can resell the items on eBay using an account under Hackett’s information. Jones stated he and Hackett made approximately $500 off the Lego sets stolen from Target between the above dates.
Two shipping receipts from the US Postal Service in Joplin were in their vehicle. The receipts showed items were shipped off to Katy Texas, and Little Chute Wisconsin on 11/04/24.
During an interview with Hackett, I spoke with her about the cases sent over by Target and her and Jones' impact on retail stores in the city from stealing. She stated, “that’s what I do, everyone else does it so it doesn’t matter."
In five days between the above listed dates, Jones and Hackett were responsible for approximately $937.08 in total loss from Target.
The case was investigated by the Joplin Police Department.

Both criminals are correct in that this is a common practice throughout not only Joplin but the Midwest. Actually witnessed a few years ago a female who ran from the Ulta store at the mall with several items, toss them into her car which was loaded with other boxed items, she cursed at me for using my phone to record it and sped off. By the time police arrived and showed them the video of the suspect, the vehicle and plate, police explained it was a common occurrence and Ulta employees said it was the same person who had hit the store five times in the past week. The criminals are aware of the stores that have policies such as no confrontation between employees and criminals and no pursuit policies of criminals. For example, walk into a Dollar General anywhere in the metro and ask an employee if you happen to take something and leave without paying, they will explain it is corporate policy to not confront the criminal, do not pursue them outside the store and do not file a police report either. Dollar General even refuses to trespass people who enter stores while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, corporate policy.
What an Attitude - Seth Ray Jones and Akasha Rashawn Hackett - She stated, about stealing - "that’s what I do, everyone else does it so it doesn’t matter." Again, lock these losers up - they deserve to be off the streets. Why get a job and work for a living when you can just steal and sell those items on your Ebay Account. This is why we have to Stop being Soft on Criminals - Lock Them Up - No Probation or Slaps on the Wrist or Deals.
Statement says “that’s what I do, everyone else does it so it doesn’t matter."
Alrighty then !
Can we expect this thief to jump off a cliff too?
You know, everybody else does it, so it doesn’t matter…
Jasper County. Nothing will happen to these two thieves. They will just 'target' (no pun intended) another store.
Typical Jasper County soft on crime slap on the wrist. Fire the prosecutors and judges….
A couple of quick notes, this is not even unique to the Midwest, nor US, this happens all over the world.
Also, I cannot think of a single business that wants regular employees to confront a shoplifter, that generates a lot of liability for the business. Retailers have ALWAYS instructed their employees to stand aside, unless they are specifically loss prevention/security.
