In defense of the Carthage City Council candidate charged with shoplifting

When I was 11 or 12 years old, I made my daily pilgrimage to Carroll Gum's store in Newtonia, opened the big red Coca-Cola case and pulled out an ice-cold Dr. Pepper.

Since there were a bunch of people at the counter, I wandered over to look at the comic books, finished my Dr. Pepper and without thinking about it, walked out of the store.

After I walked a couple of blocks, I realized I hadn't paid for the pop. I immediately turned around, went back to the store and paid. No one even knew I'd left.

It would have been easy to save the 13 cents and use it for another Dr. Pepper later, but that's not the way I was brought up.

Still, those things happen to people.

When I first read the KSN/KODE scoop that Carthage City Council Third Ward candidate Jack Perkins, 78, had been charged with misdemeanor petit theft (shoplifting) after allegedly taking items through the checkout line at the Carthage Walmart, allegedly going through the checkout line without paying and allegedly going to his car and allegedly putting the items in it and then leaving, it got me to thinking.

First, I hoped that no one was playing a drinking game based on how many times I wrote the word allegedly.

Second, I thought back to that day when I nearly left Carroll Gum's store without paying for the Dr. Pepper. Sometimes people are forgetful.

I still reach for a comb whenever it's windy even though I no longer carry a comb and no longer have any reason to carry a comb. So maybe Jack Perkins is absent-minded like me.

As I kept reading the story on Four States Home Page, I was shocked to read the language Perkins allegedly used when talking about KSN and KODE's news director Bobbie Pottorff.

“This is Jack Perkins, you just called me and I have a lot of things I want to say. But the comment, what you should publish which is probably going to be on tv…is gonna be no.. no comment. No comment. Total b——t. And you tell that f—–g news director, she better watch her a–. And i hope this is f—–g recorded. Son of a b—h.”

At first, I was impressed by Perkins' ability to maintain his composure and omit the letters from his profanity. If I were the type of person who used profanity, I wouldn't have the patience to omit the letters.

After I listened to the actual voice mail, Perkins did not have the patience to leave out the letters either.

I've been a reporter in one way or another for nearly 48 years and I've never had an accused shoplifter use language like that referring to me. Yes, a few school superintendents, a Joplin Globe editor or two, some people charged with drug or sex felonies and many of those people who insist that I'm a radical left-wing Democrat- but never an accused shoplifter.

Perkins' Carthage Municipal Court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

I hope things work out for him. I keep thinking that could have been me 57 or 58 years ago when I walked out of Carroll Gum's store.

It turned out all right for me. After all, I only had to pay 13 cents for a Dr. Pepper and I carried a comb that I actually needed.

I can't wait for PD Wilson to comment. You know it will be in support of Perkins. Wilson loves his defense of criminals and assholes.

What is wrong with you?

Hoping PD Wilson comments is like calling HIllbilly Hauling and asking for a septic delivery to your house instead of a septic takeout.

It's diiferent if you ask for the delivery to the home of a frenemy though!

I work at Walmart.

Mr Perkins is there all the time, and he’s 78 years old. Which is pretty old in comparison to most shoppers. Most of us recognize him but never knew his name until the incident January 1.

This happens to a lot of people his age. More than you would ever imagine. He scanned his items that day including alcohol, which locks up the register automatically until our associate clears the birthdate of the person buying. It does this for other items too like antihistamines, decongestant, cough syrup to name a few.

So after he scanned all his stuff in and had the associate clear his birthday, he bagged up his items and left. Like I said, it happens.

What doesn’t happen, after they are contacted is an angry profanity filled tirade and threats to a woman’s physical well-being

He’s not an intentional thief, but he is an intentionally angry guy. I don’t imagine he would work well with people who didn’t see things the way he does.

People who accidentally shoplift from Walmart should not be disqualified from public service, people who go on rants about how angry they are that they got called out for a mistake they made, those are the ones who are disqualified.

Paul Wilson did comment. He has the fake profile Bob Stevens. He can’t help himself. Let’s see what the score reads when Dan Rife comes back from his illegal impeachment. Shall we Paul?

Preach.

It probably won't be too long before some of the CCU crowd start wondering if Project 508 has secretly seized control of Walmart.

"I guess there is a first time for everything, but knowing how you write about Carthage politics, I shouldn’t be surprised what you’re really getting at."

“It’s Kirk’s fault. He controls the police department, the media, Wal mart loss prevention, city hall, the fire department, and everyone else who is against the CCU.”

And somehow he did that without ever working for the city or being elected or appointed to anything that matters.

They would have you believe that. They continually make him the issue, because they have run out of anyone else to blame but themselves for their rapid rise and fall of influence.

6:02 Perfectly articulated! I could easily forgive a possible accident/oversight, but his aggressive over-reaction tells me everything I need to know about him. He should not deal with the public or be in a position of power. Shame on him.

From your lips to the voter's ballots!

They forget to get your money and that is not shop lifting said...

When everything is always all about you, you can never do anything wrong!

If we only had cashiers it wouldn’t have happened
At his age I’m confident he thinks he’s right about everything.
Calling him a thief I’m sure he took that personally, it used to be a bad thing but these days it’s unfortunate the norm.
That being said everyone should have a bite of humble pie every now and again.
I reckon a innocent man would apologize, pay up and go on.

Has this candidate been endorsed by Carthage Citizens United yet?

A guy that old is still probably unhappy about having to pump his own gas and clean his windshield.

Plus, don't even ask him about the end of milk delivery to his house and twice a day mail service!

Several Stores are going back to Checkers - Instead of the Self-Checkout after they had ran Audits and figured out that the Cost of Loss / Stealing - Would cover the Costs of Hiring Checkout Clerks - -

I mean it is so funny that Walmart - Locks up Cologne, Electric Toothbrushes and Shavors, Razor Blades, other personal Items, and Ink Cartridges - and then you have to find some Walmart Associate to Unlock the Cage to get that Item out which then is Carried up to the Front of the Store to then go through a Checker - WHAT A STUPID - IDIOTIC PROCESS - - Wasting Time and Money - Yet in 2025 - They cannot find a Simple Way to Track Stolen Inventory Items and Arrest the Bad Guys - - -

Jack Perkins - Should have - SHUT HIS BIG MOUTH - Ran to Store to Immediately Pay for the Items he Took / Forgot to Pay / Whatever - and Apologized Profusely for his Actions.

How many People are in Jail - Because they would all like - "A Do-Over", for the Crimes they Committed - Yes, You walk out of a Store and Do Not Pay - THAT IS A CRIME - Plain and Simple. Stop the Excuses!

So, Jack Perkins - Will get - "A Do-Over", for his Lapse in Mental Facilities - and Committing a Crime. Maybe because of his Lapse in Judgement - Should he Step Down from the Carthage City Council and let someone that can maintain his Mental Acuity take his position over - We don't need another Joe Biden in Office - who his Wife was running the Country for 4-Years.

We are quick prosecutors for other peoples mistake, and even quicker defense attorneys for our own mistakes.

The dudes CV suggests he is pretty smart. I know nothing of this man and wouldn't recognize him if I saw him. I do know Walmart's self checkout crap has led to unneeded arrests. Lot of charges end up being dismissed because of the lack of intent. The angry outburst is alarming, which is why I mentioned his CV. An MBA from University of Chicago isn't easy to get. I wonder if there is a potential underlying issue with the onset of dementia?

MBAs from places like University of Chicago are one of the biggest reasons why we don't have checkouts with real people in Walmarts anymore.

I do not know this person, but from someone who has dealt with people in this age group, who are experiencing mental decline (not seeing he is, but he might be) lots of them take things and some of them get very agitated and sometimes use colorful language that they never would have when they were in their right mind. Some of you might want to take a step back and maybe, just maybe consider that this person is going through mental decline and needs some help. A little grace goes a long way!!!

Why does it feel like Blue Bell nostalgic ditty is playing while reading this? Been plenty of City of Carthage stories to have been shared, but had been eerily quiet as they have been presumably against the one sided view of this page. Hilarious! And blatent!

I can't believe the amount of attention this is getting ! I've known Jack for years, since childhood. I'm his age. I can't imagine why he's running for city council unless he really is getting senile. This whole thing is crazy !
