(From Fifth District Congressman Emanuel Cleaver)President Trump's unilateral decision to bomb three sites in Iran was not only reckless - it was unconstitutional. Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution is clear: only Congress has the power to declare war. No matter the party of the president, that authority cannot be bypassed with unilateral military strikes and a press release.
While President Trump has since boasted about the military operation, we cannot allow a president to bomb first and brag later. That's not diplomacy - it's dangerous showboating that risks trapping the United States in another endless, costly, and avoidable conflict.
Even if Iran's nuclear capabilities were significantly weakened, though reportedly only set back a few months, the manner in which this action was taken undermines both our constitutional framework and our national security. Over the past two decades, both Democratic and Republican administrations have increasingly tested and stretched the boundaries of executive military authority. This steady erosion of Congressional war powers is a deliberate power grab - and it 's wrong. That's why I recently co-sponsored two separate War Powers Resolutions to return this power back to the People's representatives in Congress.
This is a bipartisan issue. Congress must reassert its congressional authority. Any further military action in Iran - or anywhere - must be debated, voted on, and authorized by the legislative branch. The American people deserve accountability, not autocracy.

I guess I need to keep this posting this. People I have had it with phrases like Magat and Demoncrat. They're not clever and they serve no purpose in a discussion. If you missed it earlier, I apologize. I might also add that if either side of the political spectrum tries to use other derogatory terms, those will be rejected also.

President Barack Obama's administration had given $150 billion to Iran, effectively, they argued, funding Hamas.
Obama did not obtain an act from Congress to conduct his military operations; however, his actions were not illegal. Congress passed a broad 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force to approve war against al-Qaida and the Taliban, which Obama relied on to justify his military activities. However, Obama stretched the use of the 2001 AUMF to target militant groups that either did not exist on Sept. 11, 2001, or were not al-Qaida affiliates. I think the conflict with Trump for a lot of people is that he said, launching his presidential bid in 2015, that he campaigned endlessly against so-called “forever wars” and creeping American meddling. He blasted decisions to engage beyond U.S. borders as simply stupid. He called regime change a dangerous precedent that violated sovereignty and wasted cache. For Trump, the ability to topple rivals was enough of a threat without taking it out of the safe. So, did Trump have enough information to warrant the recent attack on Iran? That is the real concern. Trump has a history of wavering on military involvement until he needs to look strong in the eyes of the world.
Let's see: offer money to avoid political conflict or send in our troops and kill a lot of innocent and not so innocent people? I think that offering money is good business. When that doesn't work, go to plan B. Obama is and was a gentlemanly diplomat and he pulled out the guns when it ended up being the only plan left. It is too bad that Iran can't just build Walmart, Dollar General, and act "normal."
