Jason Smith formally files for 8th District seat

(From the Missouri Republican Party)

Following his unanimous nomination this weekend by the 8th District Republican Congressional Committee as the GOP candidate for the June special election, Jason Smith formally filed with the Missouri Secretary of State this afternoon.
“Now more than ever, Missourians need effective representatives who will stand up against the out-of-control federal government—and it is humbling to know that I may be their voice in Washington,” said Smith. “Since December, I have put more than 10,000 miles on my car as I’ve campaigned throughout southern Missouri.  It is with that same intensity that I will work over the next four months to take our conservative message to every corner of the 8thDistrict.”
Smith, a native of Salem in Dent County, is a seventh-generation Missourian.  Elected to the State House in a special election in 2005, he has championed fiscal conservatism, worked for a smaller, more efficient government, fought to protect property rights, and defended Missouri’s agricultural interests.  In November, Smith was selected by his colleagues in the House as one of the youngest Speakers Pro Tem in state history.
After the ballots were cast on Saturday, the Congressional District Committee voted unanimously to nominate Smith as the candidate in the 8th district.  A special election will take place on June 4.
