Five killed, including three Colorado children, in crash near Mt. Vernon

Five people, including three Colorado siblings, were killed in a head-on crash 3:45 a.m. today on Route H, three miles southwest of Mt. Vernon.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol report, the accident occurred when a 2002 Buick Century, driven by John Stephens, 30, Van Buren, crossed the center of the road and hit a 2002 Ford F350 driven by Mason Colley, 75, LaRussell, head-on.

Stephens and the four passengers in his car, Lori Stephens, 27, Van Buren, and her three children, Harly Pappan 7, David Pappan, 5, and Tyler Pappan, 4, all of Ordway, Colorado, were pronounced dead at the scene by Lawrence County Coroner Scott Lakin. According to the Patrol, the children were wearing seat belts, the adults were not.

Colley was lifeflighted to Springfield Mercy, where he was listed in serious condition.

The fatalities were the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th investigated by Troop D in 2014.
