(From the City of Joplin)Starting Monday, August 14, drivers along East 20th Street will experience lane closures as the construction of a pedestrian crossing begins. The crossing is located just north of Joplin High School’s Performing Arts Center near Missouri Avenue and Sunny Jim Park.
“The foot traffic is frequent in this area, and the City worked with school officials to develop this crossing for everyone’s safety,” said Dan Johnson, Director of Public Works.
The 20th Street corridor has two east- and westbound lanes and a center-turn lane. A sidewalk from the school connects to 20th Street in this location, drawing many walkers as they enter and exit the school property.
The pedestrian crossing will be similar to the crossing at 20th Street and Murphy Boulevard. A concrete refuge island will be installed in the middle of 20th Street, with flashing beacons. To cross, pedestrians will push a button and lights on the beacon will begin flashing for the first two lanes they need to cross. When they get to the island, they will push a button to activate the flashing lights for the next two lanes, alerting traffic so they can cross.
Work is anticipated to be completed by Friday, August 18. Cost of the project is approximately $40,000 and is a 50/50 split between the City and Joplin Schools.
“By working together with Joplin Schools, we were able to make a crossing that will be both convenient and safe for the students, as well as others using the shared path along East 20th Street,” said Johnson. “We appreciate everyone’s cooperation to get this project completed.”

They should have installed a above the road walkway OVER 20th street. Much safer. This is a waste of money.
This should have been started and completed while school was out. Why is this being started the week school starts.
