Speaker of the House Steve Tilley is 100 percent behind a bill that would allow state officials to carry guns in the capitol building, according to an article in the Columbia Tribune. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Jeanie Riddle, R-Mokane:
“I do not, but I certainly support the rights of individuals to do so,” Tilley said. “I would suspect that a significant portion of the General Assembly carries.”A bill pending in the House would extend the privilege of carrying a gun in the Capitol to legislative aides, statewide elected officials and their staff.
House Assistant Majority Leader Jeannie Riddle, R-Mokane, is sponsoring the bill that also would lower the age for a concealed-carry permit to 21 and create a new crime of “fraudulent purchase of a firearm.” That provision would make it a crime to use deception to attempt to get a gun dealer to sell illegal firearms or firearm parts.
The bill has the solid support of Tilley, R-Perryville. “I am not opposed in many cases to let law-abiding citizens carry guns just about anywhere,” Tilley said.
HB 778, has 61 co-sponsors,all Republicans, including Tilley, Majority Leader Tim Jones, and Joplin-area legislators Bill White, Joplin; Charlie Davis, Joplin, Bill Lant, Joplin; and Bill Reiboldt, Neosho.
