Eagleton widow: Claire McCaskill needs your help, seeking 1,000 contributors by June 30

June 30th is a crucial day for my friend Claire McCaskill.

The latest reporting period is about to end so we will be seeing more and more pleas for last minute contributions. Barbara Eagleton, widow of former Sen. Thomas Eagleton, sent the following letter out today on behalf of Sen. Claire McCaskill:

Claire's race for re-election to the Senate from Missouri next year is shaping up to be extremely close -- and June 30th is the cut-off deadline for contributions that can be included on her second quarter financial report.

That public report is what the pundits and Republicans will be using to gauge the strength of her campaign.

To make sure she has a strong report, Claire has set a goal of getting 1,000 supporters to close out the quarter on June 30th.

My husband Tom won a U.S. Senate seat in 1968 -- and was re-elected twice -- thanks to early support like yours. He proudly served on behalf of Missourians for 18 years, leading on issues of national defense, education, health care, and the environment.

I know from my husband's experience how important it is to gather early support and post strong fundraising numbers, so I'm asking you to help Claire reach her goal before the deadline.

Contribute $5 today, before the end-of-quarter deadline, to help Claire have a strong financial report.

Right now, Claire is doing exactly what she should be doing: working in Washington on behalf of Missourians, making sure we preserve Medicare, and focusing on getting our economy back on track.

But there is no question that Claire will be a top target for the Republican Party in 2012 -- in fact, just yesterday Karl Rove's attack group began a $50,000 radio ad blitz going after her.

Claire needs to fight back now, but I also know she'll face a lot more negative, personal attacks down the road. If she doesn't have the resources to respond, those attacks could decide the race. She needs reliable supporters like you in her corner.

That's why it's so important that you and I help Claire meet her 1,000-contributor goal right now, before the June 30th deadline. Even if you can't contribute much, what's important is the number of people that get involved.

Make a contribution of just $5 today, before the end-of-quarter deadline, to help Claire reach her 1,000-donor goal.

This race will be tough, there's no doubt about that. But as long as we work together, we've got a great chance to re-elect Claire McCaskill.

Thanks for your help,

Barbara Eagleton
