Joplin man indicted on meth trafficking charge

The indictment of a Joplin man for methamphetamine trafficking was unsealed today in U. S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

According to the indictment, Jamaal Darnell Thomas, 44, possessed with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine on January 10, 2025 in Jasper County.

The indictment stems from a Joplin Police Department traffic stop that resulted in driving while intoxicated and drug trafficking charges being filed against Thomas in Jasper County Circuit Court.

The probable cause statement for that case says Thomas was pulled over for not having any license plate lights and the arresting officer noted a strong odor of marijuana. Thomas refused to submit to a chemical test of his blood, but acknowledged he had been using marijuana and meth.

A K9 hit upon the drugs in Thomas' vehicle.

Thomas' initial appearance was held today in U. S. District Court in Springfield. A detention hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. May 27.

50 grams and he gets a federal offense seems kinda tough.
