Joplin man indicted for meth trafficking

A grand jury indictment of a Joplin man on a charge of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute was unsealed today in U. S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri.

According to the indictment, Mark Alan Thomas, 40, committed the crime October 10 in Jasper County.

Thomas faces a felony drug trafficking charge in Jasper County Circuit Court. A pre-trial hearing in that case was held Monday.

The federal and state cases stem from a Joplin Police Department arrest, which is detailed in the probable cause statement filed in Jasper County Circuit Court.

I, Officer Lenz, conducted a vehicle stop on a Ford truck (MO 7PHY07) at 2934 S. McClelland Blvd, in Jasper County, Missouri. I stopped the vehicle for an inoperable brake light. Mark Thomas was identified as the driver and registered owner of the vehicle.

During the stop, I observed several signs of nervousness from Thomas, and I asked for consent to search his vehicle and person. Thomas granted consent to both searches.

During the consent search, I located approximately 114.64 grams of suspected methamphetamine and several unused baggies inside Thomas' shorts.

In the vehicle, I located $4,227 in US currency. Thomas was placed under arrest.

After being read his Miranda rights, Thomas stated the substance was methamphetamine, and stated it was about 4 ounces.

Furthermore, he admitted to selling narcotics. The suspected narcotics will be sent to the crime lab for
further analysis.

The U. S. Attorney's office has filed a detention motion, noting Thomas has two previous felony convictions.
