Joplin Globe names new publisher

Josh Umholtz, publisher of Farm Talk and a West Plains native, has been named publisher of The Joplin Globe. Farm Talk, published out of Parsons, Kansas, is owned by CNHI, the same company that owns the Globe.

The Globe released the announcement on its website this evening.

“Josh brings the perfect blend of seasoned experience and high energy to the Globe team,” said Robyn McCloskey, CNHI’s executive vice president for newspapers. “He has demonstrated impressive leadership skills and commitment to quality local news and advertising content in print and online.

Umholtz replaces Joplin native Katherine Miller, who had been publisher since January 2025. Miller is not mentioned in the article. She has also been serving as publisher of two other CNHI newspapers.

The new publisher will be the sixth in eight years for the Globe. Miller replaced Robin Phelan, who took the job in March 2023, following Dave Brendel, who was fired after three and a half years.

Brendel replaced Frank Leto who had the job from July 2018 to October 2019.

Leto followed Michael Beatty who was publisher for eight years.

I hope he will change the Globe back to covering local news and local sports.

Make the classified ads great again!

Haven’t had a decent publisher since before Chiodo. Another step toward the graveyard for that publication. Irrelevant and out of touch.

Hopefully they are wise enough to see that the funny papers need to be greatly expanded for this publication! I want to see more than just Family Circus and Garfield every day. I want Prince Valiant, Bloom County, Cathy, Doonesbury, The Lockhorns, etc. And how about some fun games like word searches, mazes, spot the differences, and Tic Tac Toe. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to have some silly jokes or crazy trivia facts to read, would it? What about some cool science experiments you could try or even a recipe for an after-school snack? Has anybody seen my paper boy lately? I’m sure I still owe him money but he hasn’t walked around collecting lately that I know of. I liked him much better than the last kid. That one rode his bike right through the front flower bed and smashed my begonias!

You should have given your paperboy a $1.00 McDonalds Gift Certificate for Christmas like I did. I don't suppose you forgot to tip the milkman too?

Why can’t you be serious about things that really matter? Stop joking around about milkmen and try READING for once. You might be interested in Peanuts, Beetle Bailey, or even Dilbert if you’re up for a mental challenge. Don’t even look at Calvin & Hobbes though, you don’t deserve to!

Can the Globe be saved? that I do not know. Steady decline in readership and publishing frequency over the past few years. Now physically published in Tulsa. Editorial board does not reflect the majority of Joplin citizens, focusing on their pet left wing issues and re-publishing stories from the left leaning "Missouri Independent". What to do? Turner Blog beats them to the obituary beat and the local crime and public governmental announcements.
Turner Blog is left wing too, but at times prints stories of interest to many of us to keep us informed, the Globe publishes 2 x per week with out of date stories and 'puff pieces' for their favorite AP/Associated Press topics, subscribing to center left National Review columnists that make a living attacking Pres. Trump and MAGA and calling that 'balance'. Their AP headlines lack intelligent analysis and are deceptively misleading. Editorial Board lacks adult supervision and sees the paper as their own college opinion sheet. As I said, what to do? will this new publisher see a way forward? or is it a new lifeboat on the Titanic finding a way to have a 'fire sale' on the downtown real estate building and the office furniture?

This post is too long. Please edit it down for clarity and also please change your wrong opinions.

7:33 AM probably never subscribed to the Globe, probably subscribes to the Epoch Times and Washington Examiner instead.

Also possibly could be one of those people littering the area with all those Chick Tracts and other godbothering paper.
