State Board of Nursing approves expansion of MSSU nursing program

(From Missouri Southern State University)

Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) Board of Governors received updates on the highly anticipated expansion of a proposed Baccalaureate in Nursing degree, which will address the critical shortage of registered nurses and nursing faculty in the Four State region.

Chair of the McCune-Brooks Department of Nursing, Lisa M. Beals, DNP, provided the Board with detailed insights on the program’s growth. She highlighted the Missouri State Board of Nursing's approval for the program's expansion, which includes the addition of a second pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) cohort starting in Spring 2026.

In addition to the cohort expansion, MSSU has also secured a $347,252 grant from the state’s Nursing Education Incentive Program. This funding will support the development and implementation of a Master of Science program with a Nurse Education emphasis, further enhancing MSSU’s ability to address workforce shortages.

The Board also saw the latest outcomes of MSSU nursing graduates, citing recent reports from the National Council Licensure Examination, which demonstrate the high quality of education and preparation provided by the university’s nursing program.
