Feb. 24 preliminary hearing set for Jetton

A 2 p.m. Feb. 24 preliminary hearing will be held in Scott County Circuit Court for former Speaker of the House Rod Jetton, R-Marble Hill, who is charged with assault.

At that time, Jetton will have the first opportunity to hear evidence against him on charges that he punched and choked a Sikeston woman on Nov. 15. Jetton was not in court today. His preliminary hearing will be the first time Jetton himself will appear in a courtroom because of the charges. The date was agreed on by the prosecuting attorney in the case and Jetton's attorney Stephen C. Wilson, of Cape Girardeau, outside of court.

According to the complaint filed with the court, Jetton "recklessly caused serious physical injury" to the victim "by hitting her on the head, and choking her resulting in unconsciousness and the loss of the function of a part of her body."

The charge carries a maximum punishment of seven years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
