Five Joplin banks waive check-cashing fees for state checks

From the State Treasurer's office)

State Treasurer Clint Zweifel announced today Commerce Bank, Great Southern Bank, Hometown Bank, Mid-Missouri Bank and UMB Bank had each agreed to waive any check cashing fee for State of Missouri issued checks for customers and non-customers at 13 branches in the Joplin area through July 31. Treasurer Zweifel issues about 4,000 checks on average each month in the Joplin area.

“This agreement helps people who cannot get to their regular bank because they have lost their bank branch, have been displaced or are working in the area as part of the recovery effort. It removes the hassle from cashing a state tax return, a state payroll check, an Unclaimed Property check or another check payment coming from state funds,” Treasurer Zweifel said. “My office has been in contact with every bank in Joplin and these institutions are stepping up. I encourage banks throughout Joplin to keep up the good work – healthy and helpful financial institutions are essential to the city’s efforts to recover and rebuild.”

Bank branches in the Joplin area that will cash a state issued check for free for customers and non-customers Monday through Friday are:

Treasurer Zweifel is also responsible for issuing replacement state checks if one is lost or destroyed.

“I have directed my office to review several hundred outstanding checks issued since May 16 to Joplin area residents and businesses and to contact all recipients by phone to see if replacements are needed because of the timing of the tornado and delivery. We have already expedited the replacement of five of those checks,” Treasurer Zweifel said. “If anyone else needs a replacement check in Joplin, the process will be expedited and the check shipped overnight. We will continue to update and monitor the list of outstanding checks because we want people to have access to their money as soon as possible.”

A person needing a state check replaced or believing a state check was delayed in delivery may call (573) 751-2434 or email generalservices@treasurer.mo.gov Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
