Joplin City Council approves school district lease of Memorial Hall

With a unanimous vote, Joplin City Council moments ago approved a request to lease Memorial Hall to the Joplin R-8 School District for three years for $1.2 million ($400,000 a year).

The facility will be used for physical education classes, music classes, and sporting events, among other things. The school has an option to lease the building for a fourth year, if necessary.

The proposal was brought before the council after school officials approached the city, council members were told.

Two concerns about the deal were brought up by council members and were answered to their satisfaction.

City officials will find another location for the farmers market, which is currently held on the property, City Manager Mark Rohr said.

The lease will not include the basement portion of the building which is used for veterans' activities, council members were told. Veterans groups will be able to continue using the facility.
