Preliminary hearing rescheduled for Joplin man charged with murder, felony child abuse in connection with death of two-year-old

The preliminary hearing for Brian O'Grodnick, 22, Joplin, on charges of first degree murder and six counts of felony child abuse in connection with the June 2 death of two-year-old Jameson Long, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. September 17 in Jasper County Circuit Court.

The prosecution and defense agreed the postponement was necessary due to the filing of the murder charge and two of the six child abuse charges Friday. O'Grodnick was originally charged with four counts of child abuse.

In addition to the extra time needed for preparation for the defense, some prosecution witnesses, including the medical examiner would not have been available Thursday, according to online court records.

O'Grodnick allegedly beat the child brutally May 30 and May 31 causing him to have "multiple bruises to his ear, scalp, face, neck, jaw, chest and abdomen," according to the probable cause statement. "He also had a rib fracture, jaw injury, contusion to his liver and pancreas as well as brain and retinal hemorrhages. The injuries were caused by blunt force trauma."

The previously filed child abuse charges were a result of sustained abuse of the child over a long period of time, according to the probable cause statement.

O'Grodnick is being held in the Jasper County Jail without bond
