Roy Blunt: Democrats creating fake hysteria over voting rights

(From Sen. Roy Blunt)

Next week, Democrats will attempt to break the Senate to ram through their federal takeover of elections. They are not only trying to keep themselves in power, they’re trying to pave their way to force their entire radical, unpopular agenda on the American people.

Democrats claim their election bills are about voting rights. This simply is not true. It’s fake hysteria.

Their proposals have nothing to do with the right to vote and everything to do with the kinds of rules they think will help Democrats win future elections. Even Senator Schumer has admitted this is all about keeping Democrats in control of Washington.

But Democrats are still repeating their false claims that state legislatures are passing restrictive voting laws in order to justify their election takeover. The truth is that state legislatures are making voting easier than ever. Many states, including Georgia and Florida, now include specific provisions in state law that allow for the use of drop boxes, where no drop box provisions existed before the last general election cycle.

States like Iowa and Georgia implemented more early voting days than even the Democrats would require in their so-called Freedom to Vote Act. In fact, these states have more days of early voting than many states with Democrat-led state legislatures, like New York & Connecticut.

Democrats are trying to federalize our elections with a one-size-fits-all system that takes control away from state and local election officials. As a former election official myself for 20 years, I know that the diversity of our state-run election procedures is our system’s strength. Even President Obama in 2016 acknowledged this. A federal takeover, like the one the Democrats are desperately pushing, would make our elections less secure.

There are hundreds of pages in these proposals, filled with too many terrible ideas to list them all. Here are just a handful of the harmful policies included in their election takeover proposals:

• Undermining state voter ID laws (81% of Americans support these laws)

• Requiring states to allow ballot harvesting, which creates an enormous potential for fraud

• Turning the Federal Election Commission into a partisan tool of the party in power

• Giving taxpayer funds to campaigns

Democrats know this is wrong. They know it’s not about helping the American people.

This is an obvious power grab designed to take over our election system and give Democrats a permanent advantage. I will continue fighting these bills to keep our elections fair and secure.
