Tim Jones: People of Ferguson suffering because of Nixon's lack of leadership

In a portion of his latest newsletter, Speaker of the House Tim Jones, R-Eureka, criticizes the performance of Gov. Jay Nixon in the aftermath of Michael Brown's shooting in Ferguson.

It is natural at this point to make a rush to judgment based on what we know about the case so far. But we all have to keep in mind during these trying times that we have a justice system that will work diligently to discern the facts of the entire incident. Until we know the truth of what actually happened, our primary goal should be to keep open minds and to provide whatever support we can to the many innocent people who have seen the place they call home ravaged by violence and looting.

I visited with residents, school children, law enforcement and many other interested parties when I recently visited Ferguson. Ferguson is a familiar place to me. I have family members who reside there and also many friends and colleagues who call that community home. What I saw was a community looking for help in the form of a bold, decisive leader willing to make the tough but necessary decisions to restore peace and stability to the area. Sadly, the current governor was largely MIA during the early stages of the unrest, and then bumbled and stumbled his way from one misstep to the next once he did become involved.

The governor’s mishandling of the Ferguson situation has drawn heavy criticism from folks not just here in the state, but around the country, from all aspects of the political spectrum. Even a prominent liberal political reporter, Elizabeth Clift, devoted an entire column cataloguing the governor’s mishandling of the events in Ferguson. From his prolonged delay in responding, to his epic blunder in calling for a “vigorous prosecution” rather than an investigation, the governor’s responses have in many cases made things worse rather than better.

Sadly, the people of Ferguson are the ones suffering because of this lack of leadership. My hope is that, at the very least, we can learn from many of these mistakes to ensure similar missteps are not taken in the future. This was not an easy situation for anyone to respond to, and I do acknowledge that the governor was placed in a very difficult situation, but to see him stumble so many times in recent weeks has served as a reminder that we need better leadership for our entire state. Until we have it, other leaders must step into the void and work hard as we all pray for the best for the people of Ferguson.

Graves: It's time to rein in the EPA

In his latest newsletter, Sixth District Congressman Sam Graves rips into the EPA.

During a recent town hall meeting I held at Hannibal-LaGrange University, one thing was very clear: the people of Missouri’s 6th District are rightfully upset by government bureaucrats who are becoming increasingly aggressive in attacking our way of life. The biggest bully of the bunch, by far, is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA acts as though everything under the sun must be regulated. First they tried to regulate farm dust and targeted every ditch and pond in our fields. Now they’re going after carbon emissions from existing coal power plants. You and I know there are already too many regulations, but the EPA has more coming every day with no end in sight.

It’s time to rein in this out-of-control government.

Thoughts on the opening of Joplin High School

As I am writing this, about an hour remains before classes begin at the new Joplin High School/Franklin Technical Center.

Count me among those who are grateful that once again JHS students are together in one building and that no one is attending classes at a mall high school any more.

As critical as I have been of the people who made the decisions, I have always hoped that their excesses would not present a major problem in getting school started. Once the first bell rings, hopefully teachers and students will be able to put aside the media who will undoubtedly be present and begin the most important work of all- the learning that takes place in the classrooms.

There are some who say that it is time that we put the excesses of the Joplin R-8 Board of Education and the C. J. Huff Administration in the past and bask in the glory of opening a new high school three years after the tornado.

That would be a mistake.

Not exploring those excesses increases the chances that the practices that enabled the school district to reach the precarious financial condition it is in now will continue. That would mean that while we have a 21st Century state-of-the-art building for those who are attending high school now, we may not be able to afford what the students of the future need and may continue to lose the excellent teachers that play a far bigger role than any building in paving the road for success for our children.

It is great to have the students back in Joplin High School. Hopefully, on this day at least, the focus will be on those students and not on any of those who want to push the "mission accomplished' message.

Opening Joplin High School is not the conclusion of a mission- it is the beginning.

Now the real work begins.
