(From the Joplin Police Department)A 61-year-old male, Christopher Brodie, of Front Royal, VA, passed away at an area hospital after experiencing a medical emergency while being held as an inmate in the Joplin City Jail on October 12, 2026.
At 9:22 am, the Joplin City Jail staff reported Brodie was experiencing a medical emergency and he was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Brodie passed away at 10:17 am on October 12, 2026. Per department policy, an investigation was initiated and is ongoing. The Jasper County Coroner’s office has scheduled an autopsy for tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Next of kin have been notified.
That incident is believed to be separate from another incident also now under investigation which occurred at the Joplin City Jail today, October 13, 2026.
In today’s incident, seven inmates from the Joplin City Jail were transported to area hospitals following a medical emergency which began in the jail dormitory.
Joplin Police are actively investigating the cause of the incident, which caused medical symptoms among seven (7), but not all the inmates who were in the dormitory at the time.
At 12:37 pm on October 13, Joplin City Jail staff became aware of two inmates who were experiencing symptoms of a medical emergency, including difficulty breathing. Jail staff immediately notified the emergency communication center and ambulances were dispatched to the jail.
Difficulty breathing is one of the possible symptoms of a drug overdose. Therefore, per jail training and procedure, Jail staff administered Narcan to these inmates in order to treat possible drug overdose. While Jail staff were taking action to address the medical needs of the first two symptomatic inmates, additional jail inmates began showing similar symptoms and Narcan was administered to them as well. While Joplin Fire and METS ambulances were en route, jail staff and Joplin Police officers provided emergency medical aid to all seven inmates impacted until care could be transferred to emergency medical services.
All seven inmates who had complained of medical symptoms were considered to be in stable condition following the administration of Narcan and were transported in non-life threatening condition in separate ambulances.
The cause of the medical emergency symptoms experienced by the inmates is under active and ongoing investigation. One potential factor in the incident may be controlled substances, although the jail has a body scanner which is used in an attempt to identify any drugs which inmates may attempt to smuggle into the jail within body cavities.
At this time, Joplin Police do not believe this incident is related to the death of Christopher Brodie, which occurred yesterday following his transport to a hospital from the jail.
The remaining inmates have been moved out of the dormitory room where the incident began, and are being observed closely by Jail staff for any signs of additional medical issues.
