Brooks, News Tribune clean up at Kansas City Press Club

The Jefferson City News Tribune captured 16 awards at the annual Kansas City Press Club Heart of America Awards Banquet Saturday night, including five for Lockwood native Michelle Brooks.

Mrs. Brooks, who started her journalism career as a high school reporter for The Carthage Press in the early 1990s, took silver and bronze awards in business reporting, silver in profile, and silver and bronze in beat reporting,

Other News Tribune staff members to take home awards included Editor RIchard McGonegal, who took gold, silver, and bronze in editorial writing, Jeff Haldiman, gold and honorable mention in business reporting, silver in deadline reporting, and honorable mention in general reporting; Ra'Vae Edwards, gold in beat reporting and silver in general reporting, Bob Watson, bronze in beat reporting. and Tom Rackers, Tony Hawley, and David Owen, gold in sports writing.

The judges were also taken with Mrs. Brooks' work, something which is evident not just from her multiple awards, but also from the comments that were made about her entries, including this one for her silver award in business reporting:

"When the smoke clears, it is no surprise to read yet another of MIchelle Brooks' fine pieces. No ultralight journalism here. This is full strength stuff."


In the beat reporting category, the judges praised her work on historic preservation, a beat that few newspapers have, but one which more should have:

"The history, preservation, and renovation of priceless buildings was never covered better than by Brooks. From the foundation up, she has built a winning bea
t."
