Fate of Memorial Middle School shooter may be decided Friday
The fate of Memorial Middle School shooter Thomas Gregory White, 16, may be decided this Friday during his next hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court.
Court records indicate jasper County Prosecuting Attorney Dean Dankelson has filed the results of White's latest psychological examination, as well as a motion to proceed with the trial. Judge David Mouton has to decide whether White is capable of assisting in his own defense. An earlier evaluation indicated he was not.
White was a seventh grader at Memorial Middle School in Joplin in October 2006 when he took an assault rifle into the school, fired a shot into the ceiling, and then pointed the gun a Principal Steve Gilbreth. Police say he tried to shoot at Gilbreath, but the weapon jammed.
White is charged with two counts of assault and single counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and attempted escape. He has been in custody since October 2006.
