KODE only station to lead with non-Jackson story

Thank you, KODE!

KODE was the only Joplin station that led with something other than Michael Jackson's death. KODE led with the standoff that took place earlier tonight in Joplin.

KSNF and KOAM are following programs that were already telling the viewers about Michael Jackson's death with more packages about it.

KODE is now doing its second story, and again it is a local one, about the drowning of a child in Wyandotte. KSNF has just begun the story on the standoff. KOAM has just finished the national packaging and is now localizing the story.

KODE followed the drowning story with the first weather forecast and is just now going into the Michael Jackson story.

KOAM followed the Jackson packages with the standoff story, and then did the drowning story.

I would have the Jackson story on page one, but it would definitely not be the lead story, unless there was some kind of local angle, and I don't mean what people thought about his death If there was someone who was there when he did his moonwalk on the Motown special or a local musician who backed him or something like that, that would be different.

Not only do you have to consider the importance of the celebrity, but also your audience. If I had good photos form the standoff, I would go with that story in a heartbeat.

That's not being a liar or an idiot; this insistence on going with the flavor of the day story is one of the major contributing factors in the downfall of newspapers.

I agree with Randy on this one, It's called 'Local' news for a reason--- Thank you KODE! Michael Jackson's death is of course a big deal but it's not local and was on the news for hours prior. KOAM & KSNF can learn a thing or two from the great work KODE has been doing lately!

1. "I would have the Jackson story on page one, but it would definitely not be the lead story" = Lead Story

2. Show me a viewer who wants to see more video of JPD standing around at a scene where no one was hurt, In any other area a domestic violence case IS NOT NEWS.

Viewers do not tune in to local newscasts to see national news period!

Fact: the video that was used was both generic and boring.

Fact: It was a domestic dispute, they happen every day. The JPD S.W.A.T team must have needed practice.

Lastly do you understand how many people get ALL there news from the local stations around here.

If I want to watch Michael Jackson news I can turn over to CNN. I don't want to see it on my local news.

I would have it on page 1 with the headline "Pervert dead at 50."

Tens of thousands of monkeys are breathing sighs of relieve today.

I'm with you on this one, Randy.

Thanks for keeping 'em honest Randy! Agreed it was a domestic dispute but remember at one point it was a hostage situation. That was the top story of the day. What will KOAM have today? The "Jackson 5" top 5 @ 5. Ha!

Sorry Randy, when I tune in to local news, I expect to see national news and local news that is relevant to most (taxes and other issues relevant to many in the area). Call me callous, but a child drowning or a DV case have no effect on most people. And another thing, this area is obsessed with sex crimes. Everyday, the Globe has some sex crime story. Gets old.
