In a speech in Omaha Thursday, former Fourth District Congressman Ike Skelton delivered a ringing defense of the United States' military spending:
Skelton told the crowd at Offutt Air Force Base that the U.S. military is the world’s best because of top-rate weapons systems and a fighting force that’s far better prepared now than it was after the Vietnam War.
It would be a mistake to let military equipment age and to shrink the number of troops even as the post-Sept. 11 wars wind down, he said.
“We have a Damocles sword hanging above us called the budget,” he said. “I’m fearful this will eke into the military, and I predict a major struggle” over military spending, he said.
Skelton served as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.
