“President Obama’s recent announcement in favor of same-sex marriage not only ignores history and tradition, but also violates natural law and is out of step with the majority of Missouri voters,” said Ed Emery, candidate for Missouri state senate in the newly formed 31st District comprising Barton, Bates, Cass, Henry and Vernon counties.
“On August 3, 2004, Missouri voters overwhelmingly spoke out in favor of the traditional definition of marriage, as more than 70 percent of them voted in favor of a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between one man and one woman,” he continued.
Emery was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives, representing the 126th District, when the House voted 128 to 20 in favor of placing the constitutional amendment on the ballot. “Marriage — the uniting of one man and one woman for life — has been the only definition of marriage for thousands of years,” he said. “I’m pleased that I was a part of getting this important protection on the ballot.
“The family is the foundation for all of life, and the family’s stability is crucial to a prosperous and stable society. Whatever the issue, strong families make it better, while weak families make it worse. There is nothing more critical to our nation or to our state than the fundamental institutions of family and government. The choices we make today determine our future success or failure. That is why I am committed to working for strong families and sound marriages for all Missourians.”
Emery served four terms in the Missouri House of Representatives, from 2003 to 2010. He currently serves as Executive Director of Missouri Fair Tax, a volunteer position. Emery and his wife, Rebecca, reside in Lamar.

I do not see where Gay marriage would hurt the family any more than some of the heterosexual marriages have. If we want a strong family, then let gay and lesbian couples marry in order that their children can be given the same status as children of heterosexual children. With the divorce rate as high as it is, I don't see that families are all that stable.
