Carthage man sought for shooting death in Carthage arrested in Lamar, was given suspended sentence for domestic assault last year

The Carthage man sought in connection with Saturday's shooting death at the Quality Inn was taken into custody this morning in Lamar, according to a post on the Carthage Police Department's Facebook page.

Lane J. Stephens, 29, allegedly shot one person who was dead at the scene when Carthage Police and wounded another, who was taken to a local hospital.

At the time the shootings took place, Stephens was on probation after receiving a suspended sentence on a felony domestic assault case in Taney County February 26, 2019, following an August 25, 2018 arrest by the Taney County Sheriff's Office.

Online Taney County Circuit Court records indicate Stephens' guilty plea came as a result of a plea bargain with the Taney County Prosecuting Attorney's office that reduced the charge against him to domestic assault in the second degree.

The plea bargain came after Stephens completed an Adult and Teen Challenge rehab program, according to the online records.
