McDonald County R-1 Board drops quarantines, mask mandates, approves no tax increase bond issue

(From the McDonald County R-1 School District)

In an effort to keep you informed of the decisions being made and considered in the McDonald County School District, we will be featuring a few of the highlights from each McDonald County School Board of Education meeting.

The following points of discussion are from the board meeting on 12/09/2021:

COVID Update - No quarantines, no masks

The board approved an updated COVID plan for the school district. In response to a recent Missouri court case that declared quarantines and mask mandates enforced by local health departments unconstitutional, the school district is no longer quarantining students who have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID.

Mask requirements have also been removed except on school buses, which is a federal requirement.

Instead of individually notifying parents of kids who have had close contact with a COVID positive case, the district will post notices about cases by buildings. Concerned parents can contact their school nurses for more information.

Students or staff who have tested COVID positive will still be required to stay home for the 10 day contagion period. They may return to school 10 days after onset as long as they have been symptom-free for 24 hours. The approved plan is set for review in 30 days.

Proposition KIDS

The board approved placing a no-tax-increase bond issue on the upcoming April ballot. The bond will pay for the construction of storm shelters at Rocky Comfort Elementary, White Rock Elementary, Noel Elementary, Pineville Primary, Anderson Elementary, and Anderson Middle School.

It will also provide for improvements at Southwest City Elementary and Pineville Elementary and pay for the paving of several parking lots at various schools across the district. The total amount of the initiative is $21.5 million dollars. It will not raise the current school tax levy.

2020-2021 Audit Report

Dr. Stanton shared with the board the results of the 2020-2021 audit of the school district finances. Stanton said the report was a “good audit and a clean audit” and showed the district continues to manage its money well. He thanked all the administrative staff who are involved with finances for their hard work and diligence in that matter.
