Sinquefield, a retired investor from St. Louis, is by far the most prolific donor in recent Missouri political history.
Over the last decade, he’s given more than $41 million to various candidates and campaigns in Missouri, mostly Republicans. His main policy priorities have been cutting the state’s income tax and education issues such as private school vouchers and eliminating teacher tenure.
Fitzpatrick is in the first year of a four-year term as Missouri Treasurer. He’s facing off with state Rep. David Gregory in the Republican primary for the chance to replace state Auditor Nicole Galloway, a Democrat who is not running for re-election in 2022.
Sinquefield’s donation went to a PAC called Missourians for a Responsible Budget, which was formed to support Fitzpatrick’s political aspirations. The PAC previously reported only $13,000 cash on hand, though Fitzpatrick’s campaign amassed a $445,000 campaign war chest as of early October. That includes a $250,000 contribution Fitzpatrick made himself shortly before entering the race.
Gregory, a personal injury lawyer from St. Louis County first elected to the Missouri House in 2016, reported $436,000 cash on hand in October, including a $250,000 donation to his own campaign in September.
The PAC supporting him, called Show Me Growth, reported $360,000 cash on hand. That includes $100,000 from Joe Patterson, a retired St. Louis County police officer who now runs a firm that provides security for medical marijuana companies.
