(From Fourth District Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler)Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) introduced the Protecting Higher Education from the Chinese Communist Party Act to ban individuals serving in the National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and their family members from receiving student or research visas.
“While the CCP commits genocide and other atrocities, they continue to send their children to the United States to receive a world-class education. This must be stopped,” Hartzler said.
“The Protecting Higher Education from the Chinese Communist Party Act puts an end to this practice, effectively halting the advancement of those who are actively working to undermine our nation.”
Hartzler, who has previously been sanctioned by the Chinese Communist Party for her efforts combating the regime, has introduced a plethora of legislation targeting the CCP, including:
Combating the Persecution of Christians in China Act: This legislation would hold accountable senior officials of the Chinese Communist Party who are responsible for persecuting Christians in China. The bill recently passed through the House Foreign Affairs Committee and is awaiting a vote in the House.
Uyghur Stop Oppressive Sterilizations (SOS) Act: This legislation would impose sanctions on individuals responsible for or complicit in forced sterilizations and forced abortions in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR).
Protecting America from Spies Act: This legislation would allow the U.S. Department of State to deny visas to individuals who have committed acts of espionage or intellectual property theft against the United States.
During the 2020/2021 academic year, there were over 317,000 international students from China studying in the United States – including family members of CCP officials. Xi Mingzhe, the daughter of General Secretary Xi Jinping, previously completed her undergraduate degree at Harvard in 2014 and reenrolled for graduate studies in 2019.
