The child was the victim of child abuse at the hands of his mother's boyfriend that occurred November 10, 2017 at his home at 1502 S. Michigan Avenue in Joplin.
He died two days later at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. His killer, Leonard Valdez, 26, pleaded guilty to second degree murder during a January 17, 2019 hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court. He is serving a 22-year sentence.
The child died 22 days after the Joplin Police Department arrested Valdez for domestic assault at the same address where the abuse took place. The victim of the assault was the child's mother.
