Travis Tritt to Joplin: Forget it; I'm not performing

(From the city of Joplin)

The City of Joplin had been working with a group of citizens in a team effort to develop a community concert to benefit our citizens. Unfortunately, this event will not take place. According to a statement made by Travis Tritt, he has cancelled his appearance in Joplin that was scheduled as a final tribute to the 9-11 flag on Sunday evening in Landreth Park. Everyone involved in this effort was disheartened and surprised by his statement as no concerns had been voiced by Tritt to local representatives.

“All of the upfront costs had been pledged by early Friday afternoon,” said City Manager Mark Rohr. “Any additional revenue through further sponsorships, “text to pledge”, or other production opportunities that would have been reinvested back into the Community Foundation to help storm victims will not be realized now. This was the design from the start.”

At this time, the City and committee of community members involved in this effort encourages all citizens to participate in the various events recognizing the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 tragedy. Information about these events can be found on Missouri Southern State University’s website at www.mssu.edu .

I suppose this might have been avoided if the city had not revealed that the money came from the relief funds. I'm sure good intentions were sought but misappropriations of funds is often an issue with government officials and the citizens of Joplin did not hesitate to protest. Kudos to the reporter for providing details of all aspects. Sorry to see Travis Tritt withdrawal from the honorable event Joplin will be participating in for the memory of 9/11
